A police officer was injured Tuesday, as Westbrook police, in conjunction with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, seized several grams of heroin and cocaine and made two arrests in a drug raid.
At around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, officers from all three agencies executed a nighttime “no knock” search warrant at a Central Street apartment in the city. The warrant was the culmination of a joint Westbrook police and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency investigation into the trafficking of heroin and cocaine in the city.
They seized several grams of heroin, cocaine, weighing scales, cash and other drug paraphernalia from the residence.
Officers arrested Andrew S. Martin, 31, of 145 Central St., on charges of trafficking in heroin, possession of cocaine and obstructing government administration. They also arrested Jeremy Champagne, 27, on a charge of possession of cocaine.
During the raid, a Cumberland County Tactical Team member was injured trying to enter the apartment. The unnamed officer suffered a serious laceration to his arm as Martin attempted to barricade the door, police said.
The officer was treated at the scene by Westbrook fire and rescue staff, who were staged nearby. The officer was transported to a local hospital, treated and released.
The investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected, police said.
