All season long everyone looked to Thornton Academy’s golf team as the best in Class A. The Trojans did nothing to dispel those thoughts with an unbeaten regular season and an SMAA championship. But on Saturday at Natanis, it was the Deering Rams who spoiled the party and took the title by 6 strokes.

Deering’s top five golfers scored in the mid to high 70s. Number one Joe Walp earned a 79, Jake Nichols shot a 77, Rocco Spizuoco scored a 76 and Cooper Nadeau shot a 78, for a total of 310.

Ryan Bourgault’s 84 was discarded, as only the top four scores count toward the team total.

The Trojans totaled 316 strokes. Thornton’s top golfer, Andrew Cummings, shot an 85, Brian Angis scored 80, James Morse led the team with a 76, Zach Golojuch tallied 83 and Jon Thompson finished with a 77. Cummings’ round was not used in the final tally.

Cony finished just 3 strokes behind the Trojans with 319. Cony’s Ryan Minoty led his team with a 76, Kyle Bonefant shot 86, Jake McVety scored an 81, Tyler Moody shot 82 and Josh Zayac had an 80. Bonefant’s score was dropped.

Gorham finished fourth with a total of 321. Gorham’s David Gushee finished 1 stroke better than any other player with a 75. The Rams’ Tommy Sterling shot 79, Ian Ryan scored an 82, Noah MacVane notched an 85 and Mike Arsenault scored an 88. Arsenault’s score wasn’t used.

This weekend the top players will be at Natanis again for the State Individual Championship, where Gushee will look for his third straight title. In 2006 he finished in a three way tie with Ryan Gay of Gardiner and Chris Hamel of Waterville. Last year he and Gay tied again.
