The Windham High School football team appears to be headed for the playoffs this season after a huge 34-14 win over perennial power Gorham Friday in Gorham.
The win gives the Eagles a 4-2 record with two games left to play. The Eagles began the 2008 campaign 0-2 following two tough losses to Deering and Bonny Eagle but have won four straight since then.
Friday night against Gorham the Eagles were able to put up points in bunches. After a scoreless first quarter, Jack Mallis got Windham on the board in the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run. The extra point was off the mark and so the Eagles had to settle for a 6-0 lead.
That lead didn’t last, however, as the Rams came rumbling back. Jonathan Day ran one in from 11 yards out to tie the score at 6. Doug Woods found his way into the end zone for the two-point conversion and an 8-6 Gorham lead.
Gorham’s lead was also short-lived as Jackson Taylor found David Ingraham for a 34-yard touchdown pass later in the second quarter. That gave Windham a 12-8 lead, and the Eagles would not trail for the rest of the game. Taylor then connected with Stephen Shepard for the two point conversion and Windham took a 14-8 lead into halftime.
Windham began to pull away in the third quarter as its offense proved to be too much for Gorham. Taylor added to the Eagles’ lead on a 68-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but the lead was 20-8.
Taylor threw his second touchdown pass of the night later in the third quarter, finding Shepard for a 22-yard strike. The extra point was good this time and Windham’s lead swelled to 27-8. Taylor finished the night with 121 yards passing and 124 rushing.
The Rams scored their second and final touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter. They drove down to the Windham 1-yard line where Kamron Alexander punched it in, cutting Windham’s lead to 27-14. Gorham went for 2 points but couldn’t get back into the end zone.
The Eagles put the game away when Mallis scored his second touchdown of the game from 10 yards out. The extra point gave Windham their 34-14 winning margin. Mallis finished the night with 86 yards and two scores.
This week the Eagles host 5-1 Cheverus in a game with huge playoff implications.
Lakers fall to York
Things started poorly for the Lake Region High School Lakers Friday night when York’s Jared Prugar took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. From there, team fortunes didn’t improve and the Lakers dropped to 0-6 with a 62-19 loss to the Wildcats.
Prugar scored the second York touchdown shortly after the first one to put the Wildcats up 14-0. Travis Linehan got the Lakers on the board with 3:31 to play in the first quarter with a 27-yard field goal. But the Wildcats scored on their next possession to make it a 21-3 game. York pulled out to a 39-3 halftime lead.
A pair of third quarter touchdowns by the Lakers cut the lead to 39-19. But that was as close as Lake Region would get as the York poured it on down the stretch to earn its fifth win of the season.
Patriots remain winless
The Gray-New Gloucester football team fell to 0-6 on the year following a 34-0 loss to Falmouth. The Yachtsmen did everything right and took advantage of several Patriot mistakes to earn the win.
Caleb Bowden opened up the scoring for Falmouth with an 18-yard touchdown run. The extra point made it 7-0. That’s where the score stayed until the second quarter, when Kris Floridino scored from 7 yards out. The extra point kick failed and Falmouth led 13-0.
Later in the second Stefano Mancini scored the first of his two touchdowns from 4 yards out to give Falmouth a 19-0 lead. The Yachtsmen converted for 2 points to extend their lead to 21-0.
Mancini scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on a 2-yard run. Another missed extra point kick kept the score at 27-0. Bowden tallied his second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter to give his team a 33-0 advantage before the kick made it 34-0.
The Patriots and Lakers will face each other this week in Naples.
