African children to sing
Two-dozen African children will sing at Prides Corner Congregational Church, 235 Pride St., at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10.
The singers from Uganda are the Watoto Children’s Choir, which has sung internationally, including a performance for Queen Elizabeth II in England.
The performance is free and the public is invited. An offering will be received.
The choir is raising support for three Watoto Children’s Villages, serving 1,400 left orphans by AIDS and war. While in Westbrook, the children will be hosted in homes of church members, who will provide a potluck supper.
The Rev. Susan Gilpin, pastor of the church, and her husband once taught school in Africa.

Johnson earns Eagle Scout
Peter Johnson, 18, of Boy Scout Troop 81, earned Eagle Scout rank by the Eagle Board of Review in July before leaving for college.
A graduate of Westbrook High School, Johnson is now attending International Academy of Design and Technology in Seattle, Wash. He is studying computer science and interactive media design.
Johnson is the son of Cheryl Johnson of East Valentine Street.
Johnson joined Troop 81, which is sponsored by First Baptist Church of Westbrook, in 2001 after being a member of Cub Scout Pack 81. He has held several troop leadership positions including quartermaster, troop guide, assistant senior patrol leader, senior patrol leader, and most recently as assistant scoutmaster. Johnson has earned 26 Boy Scout merit badges.
As his community service project for Eagle Scout, Johnson demonstrated leadership as he led other members of Troop 81 in cleaning and repairing more than 60 gravestones in Saccarappa Cemetery.
Luncheon launches season
Westbrook Woman’s Club will begin its fall season with a potluck luncheon at noon on Tuesday at the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.
A business meeting will follow the luncheon.
The club is an affiliate of the international General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Westbrook Woman’s Club welcomes women of all ages who have a desire to become involved in their community through charitable and improvement activities.
Those who want to attend the luncheon or would like more information about the club should call Carol Quint, membership chairwoman, at 854-8825.
Club members will be calling area businesses to take orders for the Lobster Roll Box Lunch to be prepared Wednesday, Nov. 5. The annual project raises money for scholarships to benefit Westbrook High School seniors.
Seniors to meet
Westbrook Senior Citizens will meet at 1 p.m. on Monday at Millbrook Estates, 300 East Bridge St.
Singer Ken Fernald will perform.
