Ecumenical energy fair Oct. 11

The Gorham Ecumenical Council is sponsoring an Energy Resource Fair on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at Cressey Road United Methodist Church on Cressey Road (off Route 25), Gorham.

Agencies attending the fair include the Maine State Housing Authority, Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging, Efficiency Maine, People’s Regional Opportunity Program and 211. he Representatives from the agencies would offer advice and assistance, as would area businesses.

Chris Kimball, chairman of the ecumenical council, said in a statement that the fair is in “response to the current energy and financial crisis which we are all facing, to connect state agencies and local businesses with those who are concerned with ways to efficiently and safely heat their homes and provide energy.”

The fair is free and open to the public.

Economy exchange topic

“How to Survive a Downturn Economy,” is the Gorham Business & Civic Exchange’s topic for its next breakfast meeting at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, in the muli-purpose room at Gorham Recreation Department, 75 South St.

Speaker is John Entwistle, director of University of Southern Maine’s Small Business Development Center. Entwistle has owned and operated several mid-coast businesses and has 20 years of experience as a certified senior business consultant.

A light breakfast and beverages will be served. There will be time for networking and 30-second business introductions.

Members and guests are invited. The cost to be paid at the door is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. New members who join the exchange then will be able to attend free of charge.

Beal honored

Gorham resident Rick Beal of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage has been recognized with the Achievement Award for August.

Beal works in the office located at 53 Baxter Boulevard, Portland. The company said the award recognizes superlative achievement in every aspect of the real estate business.

“Rick’s strength lies in the fact he cares about each of his clients, and goes above and beyond in every single transaction,” said Lucille Holt, designated broker and sales manager.

Beal is a longtime Maine resident and graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in communications. He has a background in the telecommunications and customer service industry. Beal has been a full-time associate broker for four years.

He resides in Gorham with his wife, Tena, and daughter, Emily.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Sept. 25 that the U.S. debt was $9,849,249,966,383.92. That figure was up nearly one trillion from $8,999,896,581,440.62 on Sept. 25 last year, according to bureau figures.
