Rams fall to Cheverus
Gorham 16
Cheverus 22
The Gorham football team fell to 2-2 with a 22-16 road loss to Cheverus (3-1) on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. The wet conditions forced the game to be moved from Cheverus’ grass field to the turf at Fitzpatrick.
Gorham got on the board first when Jon Day scored on a 6-yard run. Doug Woods ran in the two-point conversion for the Rams to make it 8-0 in the first quarter. Cheverus answered with a 3-yard TD run by Matt Ball later in the quarter. Will Walsh’s conversion plunge made it 8-8.
Cheverus took the lead in the second quarter on an 11-yard run by Andrew Poston. The PAT made it 15-8 in favor of the Stags. Woods countered with a 41-yard scoring run later in the quarter to make it 15-14 heading into the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Walsh added to the Cheverus lead with a 21-yard TD scamper. The kick made it 22-14. Day forced a safety later in the quarter to account for the Rams’ final two points.
As a team, Gorham rushed 48 times for 302 yards. Day led the way with 24 carries for 159 yards, while Woods carried 18 times for 126 yards. Gorham quarterback Ben Moody completed one of his two pass attempts, hitting Woods for a 13-yard gain.
On the defensive side of the ball, Woods was in on 15 tackles for the Rams. Cody Stover had 12 tackles, Kyle Nielsen had 11, and Clayton Loubier, Tyler Hillman and Ryan Luxton were each in on 10 tackles.
After starting out 2-0, Gorham has lost its last two games. The Rams will look to get back on track on Saturday when they travel to Sanford to take on the 0-4 Redskins at 7 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Friday night, but Sanford played Biddeford (and lost, 28-7) on Monday in a makeup game, so the contest was pushed back a night.
