Shepard service honor grad
Airman 1st Class Joseph C. Shepard of the U.S. Air Force was awarded the honor graduate ribbon in recognition of outstanding performance in basic military training.
Col. Edward B. Westermann signed the award certificate on July 11.
Shepard earned the award for achieving excellence in drill performance and physical training along with war skills and military studies.
Class of ’50 get-together
The Westbrook High School class of 1950 will hold a mini-reunion luncheon from to noon-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Keeley the Katerer in Portland.

Christmas in August
The second annual “Christmas in Summer” is set for 4 p.m. on Aug. 2 at the gazebo in Riverbank Park.
Trinity Lutheran Church is hosting the event, which will feature traditional carols and the telling of the birth of Jesus. Brenda Orach, social ministry chairwoman at the church, said the summer celebration is minus the “stress of shopping, parties and endless over indulging.”
Trinity Lutheran pastor Thomas Chittick, Music Director Betty McIntyre and Director Jane Haugen will lead the summer Christmas observance.
The event launches a collection program as a head start for the traditional Christmas observance. Orach invited the public to take a picnic lunch, lawn chair and a friend. For more information, call 854-5653.
Free concert in the park
Caroline Currie will be in concert 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, in Riverbank Park.
Currie has performed throughout the United States and earned awards for her soulful, Celtic-influenced original music. The concert is part of the free summer series sponsored by Westbrook Recreation Department.
Trask USM graduate
Elizabeth M. Trask graduated cum laude from the University of Southern Maine and was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.
Trask, who majored in political science and minored in criminology, is the daughter of Suzanne Trask of Westbrook and the late Bill Trask, Old Orchard Beach. This fall, Trask will attend the Muskie School of Public Service for Public Policy.
Trask was inducted into the National Political Science Honor Society (Pi Sigma Alpha) as a lifetime member. She founded and was the president of USM College Democrats.
She interned at Portland West and Maine Pretrial Services. At the university, Trask ran cross-country and track. In memory of her father, she is training now for the Bar Harbor Half Marathon and the Mount Desert Island Marathon,
Mullen excels at Bentley
Amy Jeanne Mullen of Westbrook was named to the president’s list as a junior for extraordinary academic achievement in the spring semester at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass.
Mullen is majoring in mathematics.
Driscoll on dean’s list
Jacqueline Driscoll is on the dean’s list for the spring semester at Savannah College in Savannah, Ga.
Driscoll is an advertising design major.

Drouin Dance Center announces an open house for fall classes on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 4-8 p.m. at its center in the Dana Warp Mill, Suite 325, 90 Bridge St.
Visitors may tour the 5,000-square-foot facility, meet the instructors and staff, take part in dance classes and games, and register for fall classes. Refreshments will be served.
Drouin Dance Center offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, creative movement, lyrical, musical theater dance and Irish Step Dance for ages 3 through adult and levels beginner through advanced. Students will explore technique, history, choreography and improvisation in each dance discipline.

Gallery features city artist
“Southern Maine Panorama: Caren-Marie Michel,” opens Aug. 4 at Little Sebago Gallery & Frame in Windham. The public is invited to a reception to meet the artist, who lives and paints in Westbrook, on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the gallery.
Michel’s acrylic landscape paintings of southern Maine will be installed in a panorama view in the gallery. “Southern Maine Panorama” is Michel’s second installation of 6-by-12-inch landscape paintings of locations in southern Maine. Her first, which consisted of more than 100 paintings, was created for a solo exhibition, “Greater Portland Panorama,” at Jameson Gallery in Portland last summer.
“The concept for the installation came while preparing my work for a show,” she said. “I noticed that the similar horizon lines of my paintings made a new landscape when placed side-by-side. This new landscape happened regardless of the different subject in each painting. I imagined a line of landscapes in a large space, drawing the viewer in and out of each piece and back to the whole leading one as a journey.”
Michel is a graduate of Portland School of Art (now Maine College of Art). Her work has been shown in juried and invitational exhibitions in Maine, and across the country and the Salmagundi Club in New York City. Her work appeared in the February 2006 issue of American Art Collector.
The exhibit is on view through Aug. 16 at the gallery, 889 Roosevelt Trail (Route 302) in Windham. Call 892-8086 for more information.
