With the reduction in the amount of any deer permits this coming fall, now is a good time to get yourself geared up to hunt bucks only if you don’t get an any deer permit.
State officials felt with the heavy winter snow and the length of how long the snow pack lasted, that the winterkill in certain areas was quite heavy.
I can tell you from my experience that there aren’t many things much more fun than finding a big track in the snow and giving chase on a big buck, one on one, just you and the deer.
Big deer, when they know they are being chased can take you for miles and take you to school on being evasive, leaving you shaking your head just when you thought you had their tactics figured out.
Usually when hunting bucks like this, most hunters including myself, lose out to the big bruiser that they are pursuing.
First of all, you have to remember that there is a reason why they got to be big and old. After a few years of being chased by man and by coyotes, they get real smart, real quick.
My suggestion is to acquire some of the deer hunting books by some of the experts. The Benoits, of northern Vermont, have many books and videos available. I don’t personally know them, but you can’t argue with their success. Local Maine experts are Dick Bernier of Standish and Hal Blood of Jackman. These guys are the real deal, their tactics and success tracking and taking big bucks is very impressive.
Some hunters have said to me that what they’ve read in some of these informational deer hunting books is hogwash, totally unorthodox and not what you should be doing. Well, I say the proof is in the pudding, those two gentlemen know exactly what they’re doing and they have many, many big monster bucks on the wall to prove it.
A few years back, Bernier had a school going on or perhaps a seminar-type class. I don’t know if he still does it, but it would be worth looking into.
So if you’re going to go from meat hunter, to big buck hunter, get your hands on some of these very good books, read them and absorb all you can and maybe this November, you’ll take the biggest buck of your life.
