School groundbreaking Thursday
Pre-school and elementary school students will man the shovels at the groundbreaking for the Buxton Elementary School, scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, June 12.
The building site is located behind the Frank Jewett/S.D. Hanson Elementary Schools on Long Plains Road, Route 22. The public is invited to attend. In the event of rain, the ceremony will take place in the S. D. Hanson gymnasium.
The school will serve Buxton students in Grades K-5 who currently attend the Frank Jewett and S. D. Hanson elementary schools, Jack Memorial School and the Eliza Libby School. The architectural firm of Harriman Associates of Auburn, with input from school personnel and community representatives, has designed the school to serve a projected student body of 850.
The firm of David & Hanscom Inc. of Steep Falls has been selected as the general contractor. The $28 million project will be completed in time for the opening of school in August 2010.

Community yard sale
The First Congregational Church of Buxton (Tory Hill Meetinghouse), at the corner of routes 112 and 202, is hosting a community yard sale, Saturday, June 28, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Children’s items, furniture, books, attic treasures and much more will be on sale, as well as baked goods and lemonade. All proceeds benefit the church.

Adult ed students graduate
Thirty people received diplomas May 28 during School Administrative District 6 adult education graduation ceremonies.
Guest speaker was Assistant Superintendent Phil Blood, who advised the graduates to find something that they’re passionate about in either work or continued schooling, and to work toward their next goal.
Student speakers Katie Anderson and Alan Barday spoke of the impact on their lives on completing their high school education through the adult education program. They both spoke of their desire to continue their education, and the impact on their self-confidence, their hope for their future and their family’s future.
Superintendent Suzanne Lukas awarded the diplomas to the graduates.
Students enjoy wilderness trip
Seven students from the Bonny Eagle High School Alternative Education Program recently completed a three-day, two-night canoeing trip, beginning at Spencer Rips on the Moose River and finishing up at the Jackman public landing on Big Wood Pond.
The trip covered about eight miles on the river, including two short class 2 rapid sections at Attean Falls. The remaining eight miles consisted of open water on both, Attean and Big Wood Pond. Teacher Chris Loef accompanied the students.
“The trip is designed to serve as a ‘final assessment’ for the participants of the Leadership and Resiliency Program,” Loef said. “It serves as a fun way to put into practice many of the skills they have been working on throughout the year, including teamwork, personal and group safety, emotional control, physical coordination and stamina.
