The lengthy review process of an asphalt plant proposed in Gorham continues next week after a green light for a quarry last month.
The Gorham Planning Board will continue a public hearing on the project at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 28, in the Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St.
Shaw Brothers Construction of Gorham is asking the town for permission to build an asphalt plant on Mosher Road. The company is seeking permission to build a portable asphalt plant at first to be replaced eventually by a $10 million permanent plant.
The plant is proposed at a 125-acre site that is zoned industrial. Bricks were previously manufactured there.
Shaw Brothers Construction introduced plans for a quarry and an asphalt plant to the town in August 2006. Planners and neighbors viewed the proposed site that October.
Danny Shaw, co-owner of the company, and its consultants said it would be a clean operation and wouldn’t impact quality of life for neighbors. Opposition packed initial public hearings airing concerns that included health, traffic, noise and water issues.
But, only a handful of opponents attended the meeting on March 31 when planners approved the quarry for the site. The Planning Board considered the quarry and asphalt plant as separate requests.
