Players to watch: seniors: Kira Gordon, Carissa Gurette, Grace Ledoux; juniors: Catie Funk, Reegan Brackett, Shannon Stone, Melissa Bell; sophomores: Heather Carrier, Melissa Dellatore

Outlook: “We’ll be good. I think teams will put the ball in play more than last year, so we will rely on our defense. We have a lot of speed and some good athletes. I don’t think we’ll be undefeated, but we’ll be competitive and should challenge. I think we’ll be in the top five or six.”

Baseball

Coach: Jim Cronin (2nd year)

Last year’s record: 5-10

How did last year end? Lost to Marshwood in prelims

Players to watch: Chris Bernard, pitcher and center field; Jimmy Rouse, pitcher and shortstop

Outlook: “We graduated 10 seniors from last year’s team, so we will be young. Although we are young, the players we have are ball players and work hard. We are continuing to grow the program and think we will be competitive this season and improve on our record from last year.”

Boys Lacrosse

Coach: Joe Hezlep (1st year)

Last year’s record: 11-1

How did last year end? Lost to Portland in Western Maine finals

Players to watch: Kevin Daley, Ben Fink, Ryan Hunt, Chris Kipp, Darren Smith, Mark Strait

Outlook: “With key loses to graduation at every position, the Red Storm will be looking for some players to step up. At attack, senior Ryan Hunt will look to lead the offense alongside junior Jake Barrett and a platoon of other players. The midfield will be lead by seniors Chris Kipp and Kevin Daley with juniors Danny Clark and Brenden Ham looking to build on solid performances last year as sophomores. On the defensive half of the field, the Red Storm lost three starting long poles. Senior Mark Strait will return to close defense, as fellow seniors Darren Smith and Ben Fink will be handling the majority of the short stick defensive shifts. Juniors Jimmy Soules and James Wright will both see time at LSM and a few other players will see time on close defense.”

Girls Lacrosse

Coach: Marcia Wood (4th year)

Last year’s record: 7-5

How did last year end? Lost to Massabesic in Western Maine finals

Players to watch: seniors: Aubrey Wagner, def., Natalie Cahoon, mid., Cat Thorpe, def., Lily Parenteau, goalkeeper; sophomores: Lindsay Hagerman, att., Ellie Morin, att.

Outlook: “We graduated 15 seniors and only have a handful of returners. In the preseason we have been working on just getting comfortable. We need to get comfortable with new faces, positions, and just playing at the varsity level. We have a lot of speed this year which should help us.”

Boys Tennis

Coach: Craig McDonald (8th year)

Last year’s record: 11-1

How did last year end? Lost to Windham in semifinals

Outlook: The Red Storm saw much improvement last spring and earned the second seed for the Western Maine tournament. Their run ended in an epic match with Windham. Veterans Micah Abrams and Ethan McElwain are now gone, but last year’s underclassmen showed they have the talent necessary to win a lot of matches.

Last year’s record: 6-6

How did last year end? Lost to Sanford in prelims

Outlook: Last year the Red Storm doubled their win total from 2006 and qualified for the tournament as the 10th seed. They will look to improve on their win total and return to the playoffs for the second straight year.

Boys Track

How did last year end? Finished 14th at state meet

Athletes to watch: seniors: Scott Delano, Ben Violette; juniors: Sam Chick, Ben Nakanishi

Outlook: Scarborough always fields one of the top track and field programs in the state and this year should be no different. With several of the same faces from the indoor team that was second in the state, the Red Storm should make some noise in the bigger meets.

Girls Track

Coach: Ron Kelly

How did last year end? Class A state champions for the second straight year. Individual state champions were Erica Jesseman in the 3200, the 4×400 relay team of Jenna Van Dam, Hilary Curtis, Whitney Chamberlain and Allison Chamberlain, the 4×800 relay team of Meghan Summerson, Hilary Curtis, Kaitlynn Saldanha and Whitney Chamberlain

Outlook: The Scarborough girls indoor track team won the state championship this winter and many of those same athletes will compete outdoors. Everyone will be chasing the Red Storm as they seek a three-peat.
