The First Parish Congregational Church has an extra six months to install the restored town clock in the church.
The Gorham Town Council granted the extension Tuesday.
The clock, a gift to the town in 1868, was removed from the church steeple in 2006 for repairs after it stopped. The town agreed to return the clock to the church in a lease for $1 a year. A private donor gave the church money to reimburse the town about $40,000 for clock repairs.
Under an agreement, the church was to have installed the clock by March 30 in a lower level accessible by the public. But church leaders said they needed more time to raise money to make modifications. The council extended the agreement to Sept. 30.
Mark Faunce, church moderator, said after the meeting the fund drive is nearly complete.
“I expect the hands will be turning by this fall,” Faunce said.
