Plans for an asphalt plant and quarry proposed in Gorham nears the 20th month of review as a community and a company await a decision.
Shaw Brothers Construction Inc., is asking Gorham for permission to construct the multi-million-dollar project on 125 acres on Mosher Road. The company bought the property, which is zoned industrial, from Lachance Brick Co. Shaw Brothers introduced the asphalt plant proposal to the town in August 2006, and has met organized opposition from the outset.
The Gorham Planning Board reviewed details of the proposal for more than five hours Monday, following four hours last Thursday. The board will have conditions of approval available for review at another meeting, this Monday at 6 p.m., in the municipal center, 75 South St.
Susan Robie, chairwoman of the board, said the board won’t decide until Monday’s meeting whether it would allow public comment.
Opponents have voiced concerns in public hearings over noise, traffic and health issues, but company spokesmen say it won’t adversely impact Gorham’s quality of life.
