For the first time in eight years, the Westbrook High School drama club has advanced to the state finals of the Maine Drama Festival.
Under the direction of English teacher Rick Solomon, the school’s Sock n Buskin theater group performed the 30-minute play, “The Zen Substitute,” by James Brandon and Tamako Niwa, at the regional drama festival in Saco last weekend.
Westbrook students competed against high school theater groups from Scarborough, Windham, Kennebunk, Gorham and Noble High in South Berwick; as well as groups from Thornton and Fryeburg academies. Wesbrook and Scarborough were chosen to advance to the state competition.
Special festival honors went to cast members Matthew Rairdon, Leah Douglass and Nate Gowen. Also in the cast are Cassidy Leighton, Abby Webster, Samantha Good, Jenn Charlton, Kelsey Trefethen and Stephanie Brown; and stage helpers Justin Marston, Lydia Lewis and Alex Day.
The Westbrook community will have a chance to see the short play at a performance Thursday, March 20, at 7 p.m., at the high school. The suggested donation is $5.
