Bonny Eagle High School basketball player Casey McKague headlined a list of several local boys basketball players recently honored by the Southwestern Maine Activities Association.
McKague received the Gary Randall Award, given to the league’s top sportsman. A 6-foot-5 senior center for the Scots, McKague missed nearly the entire season with a blood clot.
“The Gary Randall Award is the most prestigious honor given by our conference and a wonderful honor for a special young man,” said Bonny Eagle coach Rick Simonds, named the SMAA Coach of the Year. “To go through what Casey McKague went through was so devastating but he remained a terrific teammate and captain regardless of his frustrations.”
John Onesti of the Scots, a 6-3 senior forward, received SMAA honorable mention recognition. Onesti averaged 11.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists a game. “He did so much for us,” Simonds said. “Without him we would have really struggled.”
Windham senior Travis Guerrette was named to the All-SMAA second team. The 5-9 guard averaged 11.2 points a game. He also dished out 4.9 assists a game, second best in the league. Guerrette and Onesti were both selected to play in the senior All-Star game held Wednesday at Deering High School.
Eagles coach Kevin Millington said the strong stats only tell part of the story with Guerrette. “First and foremost was his leadership,” the coach said. “He’s a tremendous kid who had the respect of all his teammates. He was our catalyst and was our man down the stretch. When we needed a big shot, the ball was in his hands. He made two buzzer beaters for us this season. And he’s as good an on-the-ball defender as anyone in the league.”
Windham’s Jon Sangillo, a 6-3 sophomore forward, was named to the All-Rookie team. He averaged 11.8 points a game and pulled down a team-high 4.6 rebounds a game.
“He’s very athletic, jumps well and runs the floor,” Millington said. “He has a knack for scoring.”
