Gorham Savings Bank has donated $10,000 to the new Centennial Endowment Fund at Baxter Memorial Library.
“We’re delighted to make this gift,” Chris Emmons, president and chief executive officer of the bank, said to the Town Council, which accepted it Tuesday.
The Town Council established the fund Tuesday. Interest generated by the fund will be used to purchase books, audio books, movies and other items for the library’s collection.
Linda Frinsko, head of the library’s board of trustees, said the bank’s gift kicks off the endowment campaign. Emmons encouraged citizens and businesses to support the endowment.
Baxter Memorial Library is observing its 100th anniversary this year. It was a gift to the town from James Phinney Baxter in 1908. Baxter, who was the father of Gov. Percival Baxter, also gave the town his family’s home as a museum.
