Westbrook 1

St. Dom’s 8

It was a tough night for the Westbrook hockey team on Saturday, as they went into the Colisee in Lewiston to face No. 6 St. Dominic’s in a Class A Western prelim game.

The Saints weren’t good hosts to the No. 11 Blazes, ending the Blazes’ season with an 8-1 win. The win moves the Saints into the Class A Western semifinals where they were scheduled to face No. 3 Falmouth.

The Saints led the Blazes wire-to-wire in the contest, jumping out to a 1-0 lead at the 5:19 mark of the first period when junior forward Simon Hebert got a goal past Blazes’ goalie Zach Joy with assists from C.J. Bergeron and Alexander Cornelio.

Just 10 seconds later, the Saints struck again, making it 2-0 when junior forward Casey Parker scored with an assist from Richard Paradis.

But, Westbrook battled back and cut the Saints’ lead in half at the 8:16 mark of the first period. Senior forward Zach Souza got the goal for Westbrook, with the assist going to senior forward Zach Johnson.

Unfortunately, that was all of the scoring for the Blazes in the game.

The Saints regained their two-goal lead late in the first period when Hebert got his second goal of the game at the 14:31 mark. Bergeron and Andrew Gwarjanski were credited with the assists on that goal.

After that, it was all St. Dominic’s the rest of the way. The Saints got one goal in the second from Daniel Lajoie (from Trevor Haefele and Spencer Teixeira). They then opened up for four third period goals from Teixeira, Hebert and two from Paradis.

Despite the final score, Joy played a strong game in net for the Blazes, stopping several point blank shots and turning away 33 of the Saints’ 41 shots on goal in the game.
