Thornton Academy 11
South Portland 2
Cam Green scored three goals in a seven-goal first period to lead the Thornton Academy hockey team to an 11-2 win over visiting South Portland on Saturday. Zack Ouellette had a pair of goals for the Trojans as well.
Thornton wasted little time flexing their muscle in this one. Just 2:41 into the first period, Travis Dion found Peter Bilotta for the first goal of the game. Dion finished the game with four assists.
At the 6:12 mark of the first period, Tommy Ellis of South Portland was whistled for holding. The ensuing power play led to Thornton Academy’s second goal of the game. This time, Dion found Green for the score.
Shortly after the power play goal, Sam Butts got the puck to Sam Canales for what would prove to be the game-winning goal for the Trojans. Just seconds later, Dion found Alex Howard for the fourth Trojan goal of the first period for a 4-0 lead.
Green tallied his second goal of the game late in the first period off another setup from Dion. Just over a minute later, Green finished off his hat trick. This time he got help from Butts.
Ouellette scored his first goal of the game late in the first period. It was the seventh goal of the period for the Trojans.
The Red Riots finally got on the board early in the second period. Josh Cobb scored on a pass from Nick Fornwalt just 35 seconds after the face off. The Trojans only netted one goal in the second period. In the final minutes of the period, Jonathan Pate scored from Chris Stasio to make it 8-1 Thornton.
With eight seconds to go in the second, Robert Hannigan was sent to the box for tripping. His penalty carried over into the third period and Thornton wasted no time taking advantage of it. Just 52 seconds into the period, Dion scored on a pass from Green.
Still early in the third Stasio was called for holding. Justin Murphy scored shot-handed for Thornton to make it 10-1. South Portland got a power play goal late in the third. With Bilotta in the box, Ellis took a pass from Cobb and found the back of the net. But the Trojans scored again just a couple minutes later when Ouellette rippled the net again.
The loss drops South Portland to 6-7-1 on the year. They were scheduled to take on Noble on Thursday. The Trojans improved to 10-3-1 with the win on Saturday. A victory Monday over Deering improved the Trojans’ record 11-3-1. They were scheduled to face St. Dom’s on Wednesday.
