With the Western Maine Conference Championship indoor track meet taking place this weekend, Class B teams took part in their final regular season meet Saturday at USM in Gorham. Wells High found themselves on top in the girls meet with 152 points. Cape Elizabeth was second with 145. Poland claimed the number one position in the boys meet with 131 points and Gray-New Gloucester took second with 102.

In the girls meet, The Capers won five events. Emma Hockmuth won the pole vault by clearing the bar at 7-6 in fewer tries than the runner-up. In the one-mile run, the Capers swept the top three positions. Erin Gross was the winner in 5:40.71. Rachel Nichols was second and Hannah Doss was third.

Nichols went on to win the 800-meter run in 2:42.41 to pace another sweep for the Capers. This time, they claimed the top four spots. Gross was second, followed by Doss and Shannon Lyons.

Marita Stressinger won the two-mile run going away. Her time of 11:49.33 was over two minutes better than her nearest opponent. The Cape 4×200 meter relay team was victorious in their race as well.

The Lake Region girls finished the meet in fifth place with 57 points. The Lakers won just one individual event, but had several top finishes to secure their 57 points. Lauren D’Ascanio was the lone Lake Region winner in the senior shot put. Her best throw was 30 feet. Amanda Place was fifth in the event.

The Lakers were second in the junior high jump. They picked up a pair of third place finishes in the junior and senior hurdles. D’Ascanio was third in the senior division with a time of 12.66 seconds.

Lake Region picked up some more points with fourth and fifth place finishes in the two mile run. Their 4×200 meter relay team was third and the 4×800 meter relay team was second.

Gray-New Gloucester’s girls were sixth in the meet with 27 points. The Patriots were able to win just one event, the junior shot put. Emily Detroy won that event with a throw of 25-11 1/2.

On the boys’ side, the Patriots won four events on their way to a runner-up finish in the meet. Mike DeJager won the open pole vault by clearing the bar at 9-6. The 4x 800-meter relay team came out on top in that event with a time of 9:31.60.

Sam Kiyanitsa won the one-mile run in 5:30.77 beating out Andrew Carlson of Lake Region. The 4×200 meter relay team won their race as well.

The Patriots had a few other top finishes to secure more points. Zeth Horr was second in the junior shot put with a throw of 37-1/2. Kiyanitsa also finished fourth in the pole vault. The Patriots also secured a third place finish in the junior 55-meter dash. In the senior division they placed second. They also took second in the senior 200. Gray-New Gloucester had runners finish second and third in the 800-meter run.

The Cape boys finished the meet in third with 94 points. They also won four events to compliment several strong finishes. Brendan Shields won the triple jump with a jump of 36-10 1/2. Shields also took the 55-meters in the junior division. The Capers picked up event wins in the two-mile and the 4×200 meter relay.

Tommy Foden was fourth in the junior shot put for the Capers. Curtis Dulac took second in the pole vault. The Capers were second in the junior hurdles and Dulac was third in the senior 55-meter dash.

The Lake Region boys finished the meet in fifth with 73 points. The Lakers didn’t win any events, but had many strong performances. They had a second place finish in the senior shot put and another in the junior high jump.

In the triple jump, the Lakers took third and fourth place. The 4×800 meter relay team was third in their race. Lake Region also finished third through fifth in the junior hurdles. Carlson was second in the mile with a time of 5:44.35. The 4×200 meter team took second.
