Post 197 revs up biker program

An American Legion biker group, Legion Riders, is forming at Westbrook Memorial Post 197. Legion Riders, made up of legion family members who are also motorcycle enthusiasts,

raise scholarship money for the children of soldiers killed in defense of the country.

Those wishing to join must first be a member of the American Legion or its auxiliary or Sons of the American Legion Squadron, but not necessarily of Post 197. There will be a signup sheet at the post for those who would like to learn more about this program, said Post Commander Dana Staples.

Staples said as soon as about 10 are interested Department of Maine Commander Paul L’Heureaux, would explain the program and its involvement with the post.

“We would like to see 35 or 40 members,” said Staples. “This is a great opportunity to promote not only the American Legion, but put a new light on the way people perceive motorcyclists as well,” Staples said.

Nationally, the group has already turned in more than $409,000 toward the scholarship program.

Mailhot, Babineau wedding

Shannon M. Mailhot and Steven G. Babineau were married on July 28 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.

Monsignor Paul F. Stefanko officiated. A reception followed at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland.

The bride is the daughter of Marc and Kathleen Mailhot, Westbrook. The groom is the son of Jerry and Jackie Babineau, Windham.

Bride’s attendants included matron of honor Allison Laverriere, sister of the bride; Lindsay Badger, Lisa Estabrook, Lorie Hurst, Terri Trudell, Melissa Blind, Amanda Huston and Michelle Fish, bridesmaids; Cameron Woods, flower girl.

Thomas Bourden was the best man. Groomsmen were brothers of the groom Gary Babineau and Kevin Babineau; Christopher Mailhot, brother of the bride; Jamie McPheters, Shaun Breton, Jason Perry and Timothy Bennett. Ring bearer was Garrett Babineau, nephew of the groom.

The newlyweds honeymooned in Ochos Rios, Jamaica, and they reside in Windham.

Seniors’ events

Westbrook Senior Citizens will be served a ham dinner at noon on Monday at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St. A business meeting will convene at 1 p.m. and Slim Andrews of Maine Country Hall of Fame will entertain.
