Smoking vote at Post 197

Westbrook Memorial Post 197 of the American Legion will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the post headquarters on 300 Conant St. to vote on a smoking ban.

A discussion will precede a vote on whether the post will remain a smoking facility or ban smoking completely. “Legally, we’re not required to vote on this issue until September,” said Dana Staples, post commander, “but because the question keeps coming up it was decided to do it now and get it behind us.”

As it stands now, smoking is allowed at Legion functions. If the facility is rented out for a public function, such as a wedding reception for example, there is no smoking. Three years ago a vote was 2-1 in favor of remaining a smoking facility, Staples said.

“I wouldn’t even dare guess which way it will go this time. There is a lot of talk from both sides, but I guess it all boils down to who and how many show up to vote,” Staples said.

A meeting storm date is 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16. For more information, call 854-5788.
