Cape Elizabeth 60

Sanford 34

The Cape Elizabeth boys’ basketball team dominated the second and third quarters Friday to roll to a 60-34 win over Sanford in the Maine Mall Holiday Classic. Andrew Dickey had 14 points for the Capers, and Tom Ray added 13. Ryan Fortier led Sanford with eight points.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter, with both teams having trouble getting their shots to fall in. The Redskins missed several layups under the basket and the Capers couldn’t find the bucket either. However, Cape did get seven points in the first from Ray, Dickey and Alex Bowe. Sanford scored four points in the first and they all came from Fortier.

The second quarter was a much different story, at least for the Capers. They opened with a couple of baskets to take an eight-point lead. Sanford knocked down a free throw to cut it to seven points. Then Cape went on their first big run of the game. Dickey scored nine points in a row to give Cape a 21-5 advantage.

The Cape run was briefly interrupted by Kory Parker and Eric Carlson of Sanford who scored five points in a row. Following that, Cape reeled off another 10-point run to take their biggest lead of the game to that point, 31-10. The Redskins knocked down a couple of baskets at the end of the half and the teams entered the break with Cape holding a 33-13 lead.

Things didn’t change much in the third quarter. The Capers held Sanford to just eight points while scoring 12 of their own. Midway through the third, the Cape lead swelled to 26 points after Ray hit two free throws at the end of an 8-0 run. By the end of the third, the Capers were up comfortably 45-21.

The game was more back and forth in the final quarter. Neither team could make a long sustained run. The Redskins were finally able to get their shots to fall and they had their best offensive quarter of the game with 13 points. Unfortunately it was already too late. The Capers kept their huge lead intact with a 15 point output in the fourth quarter to seal their 60-34 win.
