The Scarborough girls hockey team scored two goals in both the second and third periods to pull away from Gorham and earn a 5-1 win Saturday at the USM Ice Arena. Jackie Morin had two goals for the Red Storm and Felicia Mazzone made 14 saves to earn the win.
The Red Storm got on the board first, early in the first period. Chelsea Barrett fed the puck to Morin, whose shot found the back of the net for a 1-0 Scarborough lead. That lead would be short lived, however, as the Rams struck back late in the period.
Emily Rosenblatt was sent to the penalty box and the Red Storm had their first power play of the game. Despite being short-handed, the Rams tied the game. Ashley Martin fired a shot at Mazzone, who kicked it away but Laurie Foustoukos gathered in the rebound to knot the game at a goal apiece.
The Red Storm reclaimed the lead midway through the second with a power play goal. Adrienne Rosenblatt was sent to the box for high sticking and Scarborough pounced on the opportunity. Jordan Finley sent the puck to Samantha Ramsdell, who fired and scored the go-ahead goal.
Scarborough added an insurance goal just 19 seconds later. Morin got the puck over to Abby Cherry, who found the back of the net to give her team a 3-1 advantage after two periods.
The Red Storm began to get some separation early in the third period when Morin took a pass from Barrett and skated into the Gorham end. She shot toward the net and the puck ricocheted off the post and in for her second goal of the day and a 4-1 Red Storm lead.
Finley added another goal for Scarborough later in the third off a scramble in front of the net. That gave the Storm their winning margin.
