The University of Southern Maine’s winter sports teams have a decidedly local flavor this season, with athletes from all around the Lakes Region making the rosters and playing well in several sports.

Former Patriots taking the court

Fans of the Gray-New Gloucester Patriots should pay particular attention to the USM womens basketball team. The Huskies squad features two former Gray-New Gloucester athletes.

Dawn Ross, a senior from Gray, has started all nine of the Huskies’ games this season, helping the team to an 8-1 record. Ross is averaging 5.7 points per game with a .909 free throw percentage.

Ross is joined on the squad by fellow Gray-New Gloucester graduate Josalee Danielli, a senior from New Gloucester. Danielli is averaging 8.8 points per game this season to go along with an average of seven rebounds per game. Danielli had a season-high 11 rebounds in an 81-57 over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on Dec. 8.

The Huskies are off until Jan. 4, when they play the University of Maine-Presque Isle at home in the Southern Maine Invitational at 7:30 p.m.

New Gloucester native helps mens hoop to win

New Gloucester’s Ian Hebert, a senior forward on the USM mens basketball team scored a career-high 15 points in a road win over the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers on Dec. 14.

Hebert, a graduate of Gray-New Gloucester High School, played an essential role in the Huskies’ come-from-behind win, scoring 11 points in the second half. He grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to record his second double-double of the season in the 58-48 win.

Hebert equaled his career-high with 15 points and snatched a

game-high 10 rebounds to record his second double-double of the season. Hebert scored nine of the Huskies’ final 17 points, and he went five-for-six from the free throw line in the game.

Windham grad wins two events for USM track

Senior Derek Murchie of Windham, a graduate of Windham High School, had a standout day for the Huskies at the USM Preseason Invitational on Dec. 8.

Murchie placed first in the 55-meter dash and he tied for first place in the 200-meter dash. Murchie posted a time of 6.68 seconds in the 55-meter dash and ran neck-and-neck with Bowdoin College junior Damon Hall-Jones in the 200-meters and finished tied for the top spot with a time of 23.38 seconds.
