Key Bank’s donation of $5,000 has kicked off the new South Portland Project Scholarship initiative.
The donation is the first major gift to the endowment, which is designed to give a scholarship to all graduating high school seniors in South Portland.
“We support the Mitchell Scholarship program, which we have supported for the past five years with over $330,000, and we believe this new program in South Portland can serve as a model for all communities in the state to help students continue their education,” said Richard Lucas, president of KeyBank, Maine district
The goal of the South Portland Project Scholarship program is to give $2,000 to every graduating high school student for the first two years at any college or technical school. The scholarship committee, which includes members of the community, school and students, will begin a formal fundraising effort in February by contacting alumni of South Portland High School, residents of South Portland and local businesses.
To donate to the South Portland Project Scholarship fund, mail a check to Maine Community Foundation with a note saying “South Portland Project Scholarship” to Accounting Dept, 245 Main Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
