The annual Westbrook Invitational high school wrestling meet attracted its usual share of quality teams last Saturday in Westbrook. Nineteen different squads scored points at the event. When all was said and done, the defending Class A state champs from Massabesic topped the field with 139 points closely followed by Sanford (122), Deering (108), Morse (105) and Bonny Eagle (97).
Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth both finished the meet with 24 points. The Red Storm were led by a terrific day from Brandon Carroll. The 189-pounder won his weight class with a pin of Massabesic’s Alex Holland in the final second of the championship bout. Carroll’s efforts did not go unnoticed as he was voted the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler in the upperweight division.
“Brandon committed himself all summer to getting ready for the season and he’s shown a tremendous amount of improvement,” said Scarborough coach Phil Hamilton. “Brandon dug deep and showed a lot of heart in his finals match Saturday, while ultimately earning the praise and recognition of the other coaches.”
Cape’s defending state champion Nate Lavallee also had a fine day winning the 285-pound weight class with a first round pin of Morse’s Carl Nygaard in the championship final.
