It was a mixed bag of success this fall for the Windham High varsity sports teams. All of the Eagle squads were competitive and some showed marked signs of improvement as the year went on, but some enjoyed a bit more of that success than others.

Football

The Windham football team finished their Western A schedule with a 1-7 record, but that in no way indicates their willingness to compete in every minute of every game.

The Eagles owned a 20-19 lead over Deering in week one, they had a 14-0 lead over Bonny Eagle in week two, and they eventually won their first and only game of the season with a 14-2 decision over Portland in week three. Windham suffered a narrow 7-6 loss to South Portland and they trailed by manageable 7-0 halftime scores to both Kennebunk and Cheverus in two other losses.

Field Hockey

Windham’s field hockey team ended the season at 2-10-2. The squad had victories over Thornton and South Portland and they tied Massabesic and Westbrook. The Eagles also suffered several slim one-goal defeats at the hands of Kennebunk, Noble and Marshwood.

Had the Eagles been able to convert an extra scoring chance or two in some of those close games their season might have included several other wins and a possible tournament berth.

Boys soccer

The Windham boys soccer team finished the regular season at 6-7-1. The Eagles just squeaked into the playoffs as the No. 12 seed in the 12-team West A tourney field.

The boys played very well in their 1-0 prelim loss at No. 5 Greely. Nick Taylor had a terrific game in net for the Eagles – making 12 saves and keeping his team in the game until the last seconds. The Rangers eventually moved on and won the regional crown, but not before a hard-fought battle with Windham in the opening round of play.

Girls soccer

The Windham girls soccer team ended the regular season as the No. 5 team in Western Maine Class A thanks to a sparkling 10-4 record. The Eagles knocked off No. 12 Sanford in the prelim round of the tourney before being upended in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 overtime loss at No. 4 Cheverus.

The Eagles proved to be a tough opponent all season long. They lost a narrow 1-0 decision at Gorham – the eventual state champion – in mid-September and they followed that with a nail-biting 1-0 loss at Scarborough. (Gorham and Scarborough finished the regular season at No. 1 and 2 in the region.)

Windham did get a pair of one-goal wins over highly ranked Cheverus and Marshwood during the regular season before seeing their offense get shut down in the quarterfinals.

Golf

The Windham golf team went 1-9 on the season with an 8-5 win coming at midseason against Bonny Eagle. The Eagles did play a very difficult schedule with two matches each against state champion Thornton (9-1), highly regarded Gorham (9-1), and an equally good team from Kennebunk (9-1). Bonny Eagle and Biddeford also proved to be strong opponents for the Eagles who expect improvement in 2008.

Sam Leblanc played in the Class A schooboy championship and tied for seventh with an 81.

Cross country

The Windham girls cross country team placed 14th at the West A regional meet. They were led by a top-20 showing from freshman Erin Flatley.

The Windham boys cross country team finished 13th at the West A regional with sophomore Garrett Clemmer the Eagles top runner that day.
