A Westbrook man missing for more than a month, facing charges he assaulted an infant, turned himself in to Westbrook police Tuesday morning.
Steven Waterman, 20, had been missing since Oct. 25, after a test issued by Maine Pretrial Services revealed he was positive for illegal drugs, violating bail conditions. A warrant for his arrest was issued Nov. 5. He had been released from Cumberland County Jail on $2,000 bail in July and was under the supervision of Maine Pretrial Services.
Waterman was charged on May 17 with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of assault on a minor in connection with the abuse of a 6-month-old child in his care, Camren Baker.
Westbrook Police Officer Mike Sanphy said he received a phone call from a member of Waterman’s family around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.
“He said he was tired of looking over his shoulder,” Sanphy said.
After the call, Sanphy said, he went to the family’s home and arrested Waterman without incident.
Police say Waterman had been babysitting for the baby’s mother, Jamie Swan, on May 16. Swan was dating Waterman at the time. According to police, when Swan returned home from attending college classes, she found bruises on her son.
Swan took the baby to the hospital, where it was determined he had more than 25 bone fractures, bruising on the brain and hemorrhaging behind his eyes. He was soon released from the hospital, but several weeks later, during a routine checkup, doctors discovered brain swelling. Camren underwent surgery where a shunt was inserted to drain the fluid from his skull.
