As the calendar moves into December and the winter sports seasons get underway, here is a quick look back at some of the highlights of this fall’s local sports season.

Whitney Chamberlain of Scarborough and her Red Storm teammates had a great cross country season, winning the Western Maine Class A championship before narrowly losing the state Class A title to Brunswick by just four points.

South Portland forward Brian Arsenault battles for the ball in a September game against Westbrook. The Riots reached the Class A Western tournament by posting a 6-6-2 record. South Portland, the tournament’s 10th seed, lost a tightly-contested 1-0 battle with Kennebunk in the regional prelim.

Cape Elizabeth’s Colleen Martin is tripped up by Fryeburg’s Heather Johnson in an early-season game at Hannaford Field. The Capers finshed the season at 6-7-2 and made the Western Maine Class B tournament as the No. 8 seed, scoring a 2-1 win over Yarmouth before eventually falling to top-seeded Maranacook in the quarterfinals.
