New pastor named at First Baptist
The Rev. Richard C. Gustafson, Derry, N.H., will be installed as senior pastor at First Baptist Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 733 Main St., Westbrook.
Gustafson succeeds the Rev. James Smith, who has served three years as the pastor. Gustafson was senior pastor at the First Baptist Church in Derry for 11 years.
In involved with the Derry community, Gustafson spearheaded a drive to establish a homeless shelter. He also co-authored a grant with the Salvation Army that created a position for an outreach worker for at-risk youth.
Gustafson organized a community prayer group among area churches and served as chaplain for Derry Hospice.
“We are excited to have a person of Pastor Gustafson’s experience, competence and vision lead our church. Leadership is such a critical part of a church’s health and vitality. We look forward to new ventures in faith and outreach under his guidance,” said Jan Perry, a member of the church’s search committee.
Gustafson said he’s excited about the potential for ministry at the Westbrook church. “The congregation has a real desire to grow their ministry to the community. I have a real passion for helping people to grow spiritually,” Gustafson said.
Gustafson earned a bachelor’s degree at Bethel University, a master’s at Youngstown State University and master of divinity from Gordon-Conwell Seminary.
He and his wife, Janette, have been married 20 years and have three children, Abigail, 19; Julia, 17; and Seth, 15. They are living in Gorham.
The community is invited to the installation service. The Rev. Rick Francis, president of New England Bible College, will deliver the sermon.
Historians to remember vets
Veterans will be honored when the Westbrook Historical Society meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at 17B Dunn St.
The program is entitled “Remembering Our Veterans from the Civil War to the Present.” Local veterans will relate their military experiences and members of the audience are invited to add comments. Military and wartime memorabilia will be on display.
Marines to observe birthday
Local Marines will commemorate the corp’s 232nd birthday with a celebration 9-11 a. m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, in Westbrook’s Public Safety Building.
A cake and refreshments will be served. Marines and all veterans are welcome. For more information about the local observance, call Fred Monson at 854-0644.
The Marines were founded by an act of Congress on Nov. 10, 1775.
Cutter, Regan engaged
Earl and Judy Cutter of Westbrook and Rick and Carol Regan of Standish have announced the engagement of their children, Benjamin and Marissa.
They are both graduates of St. Joseph’s College in Standish.
Benjamin Cutter owns Brookscapes Property Services and Marissa Regan is a teacher at Maine School Administrative District 57.
An August 2008 wedding is planned.
