Kennebunk 12
Scarborough 0
On Friday night, the Scarborough Red Storm finished off their football season with a game against the Kennebunk Rams in a steady rainstorm that turned the stands into a sea of umbrellas.
The Red Storm (2-6) closed out their season on a down note, falling 12-0 to the Rams (4-4), but they can still take some pride in improving on last year’s 0-8 record.
The Storm were led on offense by senior Kenny Mancuso, who keyed a running attack that was able to move the ball against the Rams, but was unable to break through for a score.
Because of the windy and rainy conditions that made the artificial turf field slick, both teams utilized a rushing attack for most of the game, attempting very few passes.
Kennebunk opened the scoring with 4:29 left in the first half, when Kyle Bertrand broke through the Scarborough line for a one-yard touchdown run. A missed extra point left the score at 6-0.
The score stayed that way at the half, as the weather continued to get worse and fog made it difficult to see across the field.
Scarborough mounted a threat early in the third quarter when senior Darren Smith busted out for a 59-yard run, giving the Storm first-and-ten from the Rams’ 12. Unfortunately, the Storm was unable to punch the ball through and gave the ball back to Kennebunk on downs.
Scarborough mounted another serious scoring attack in the quarter, when quarterback Max Erwin hit senior Reid Griffith for a 25-yard gain with 1:40 left, bringing the ball to the Rams’ five. But like the prior drive, the Storm were held out of the end zone, and Kennebunk took over on downs.
Kennebunk closed out the scoring with 2:07 left in the game when Nick Gross ran for a 10-yard touchdown. The Rams missed the extra point, making the final score 12-0.
