An overtime loss in the regional quarterfinals was how the 2006 season ended for the Scarborough field hockey team. They vowed to take it at least one step further this year, and after Saturday’s 3-2 win over Gorham in the West A semifinals the Red Storm have done just that.

Gorham scored first, with Hannah Prince giving the defending regional champs a 1-0 lead in the opening half. Molly Gove answered for Scarborough just five minutes later as she converted a penalty corner to knot the score at 1-1.

Scarborough’s Heather Carrier broke that deadlock in the first minute of the second half to give the hosts a 2-1 lead and a goal by Nancy Leasure gave the Red Storm an insurance goal and a 3-1 advantage.

Hannah Prince pulled the Rams within 3-2, but the Red Storm defense held off the Gorham attack in the closing moments of the game for the victory.

The second-seeded Red Storm (14-1-1) was scheduled to face top-seeded Sanford (16-0) in Sanford on Wednesday evening for the Western Maine Class A championship and a shot at the state title on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Sanford scored a regular season 3-0 win over Scarborough back on Sept. 14.
