The Gorham field hockey team ended its season Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to Scarborough in the Class A semifinals.

Sophomore forward Molly Gove scored in the first half for the Red Storm. Sophomore defender Heather Carrier put Scarborough up 2-1 thirty seconds into the second half, and senior captain Nancy Leasure scored the third and final goal for Scarborough. Sophomore midfielder Hannah Prince scored the two goals for Gorham.

This was the second meeting of the year between Gorham and Scarborough. The first was played on Sept. 28, resulting in a 1-1 tie.

“We knew it could have gone either way,” said Gorham head coach Amber Hatch. “They’ve had an outstanding season. I tip my hat to them.”

Gorham struck first 13:31 into the game on a goal from Hannah Prince, her first of the game. “(Prince) is pretty determined, she never quits, that in addition to her being very skilled, so that brings her up a couple notches,” said Hatch. “She just doesn’t give up.”

Despite being down early, Scarborough was prepared for that kind of situation and was still confident they could regroup and play well.

Scarborough tied the game three minutes after Prince’s goal, on a goal from Molly Gove, who scored on an absolute rocket into the net.

The Red Storm took a 2-1 lead only 30 seconds into the second half, when Heather Carrier found the net.

Senior captain Nancy Leasure scored six minutes later, giving Scarborough a 3-1 lead and an insurance goal that gave the Red Storm some much needed breathing room. The two goal lead was cut to one when Hannah Prince scored her second of the game, making Leasure’s goal that much more important for Scarborough.

“We had never gone past the quarter finals, but now, we know we can do it,” said Leasure. “We went farther than we ever could, wherever we thought was possible for Scarborough High School. It took all we had, from the bottom up.”

“You know (Gorham) is a top quality team, and to be able to beat teams like that, you know you are successful,” said Scarborough head coach Kerry Mariello. “It’s a great feeling.”
