The Bonny Eagle Scots did their part in making sure their game this week against Gorham is a battle between two undefeated teams by crushing the Portland Bulldogs 49-14 at home on Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback Nate Doehler led the Scots (7-0) by throwing for two touchdowns, rushing for two more and also returning an interception for a touchdown.
Doehler opened the scoring for the Scots by hitting senior John Onesti for a 16-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Doehler added the extra point, and the score was 7-0 in favor of the Scots.
Doehler continued his assault on the Bulldog offense in the first quarter by scoring on a seven-yard run, after he added the extra point, the Scots had a 14-0 lead.
Bonny Eagle moved out to a 21-point lead thanks to Ricky Hoyt, who grabbed a 17-yard pass from Doehler for the Scots’ third score of the game. Hoyt also had a solid game on the defensive side of the ball, picking off Portland quarterback Andrew Lieberman three times.
Portland cut into the Scots’ lead later in the second quarter when Lieberman found Jake Alexander for a 26-yard touchdown reception to make the score 21-7.
Hoyt got his second touchdown of the game on the ensuing kickoff when he broke off an 82-yard return for a touchdown, giving the Scots a 28-7 lead after Doehler added the extra point.
Bonny Eagle kept the offensive attack up after halftime when Doehler got his second rushing touchdown of the game from 14 yards out. The extra point was no good and the Scots had a 34-7 lead.
Doehler grabbed another touchdown, this time on the defensive side of the ball, when he returned a third quarter interception 19 yards for another score, giving the Scots a 41-7 lead.
The Bulldogs got another score to make it 41-14 when Lieberman and Alexander hooked up for another touchdown pass from 10 yards out.
The Scots’ Sam Proudman closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run. Proudman also added the two-point conversion to make the final score 49-14.
This Friday night at 7 p.m., the Scots will have their work cut out for them as they travel to Gorham to take on the Rams in a game that will attract the attention of most of the state’s football community.
The game between the only two remaining teams in Western Maine Class A will determine who goes into the playoffs as the top seed. Gorham comes into the game on a strong note, having shut out Westbrook 49-0 on the road last Saturday afternoon.
