Cape Elizabeth senior Johnny Hayes completed a highly-successful two week stretch of golf by firing a 73 to win the Class B schoolboy title last Saturday at the Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro. One week earlier, Hayes helped lead the Capers to the Class B team championship with a best-of-day round of 68.
“I played decent,” Hayes said. “After the state (team) tournament I didn’t practice once. I went to the range just before Saturday’s round. I double bogeyed the first hole and ended up with four birdies and two bogeys (the rest of the way).”
Hayes played well despite his lack of playing time and despite the adverse conditions on Saturday. Heavy rains on Friday made the course wet and soggy and Saturday’s windy and cold weather didn’t help any of the players. “The course was playing real easy with no wind and dry conditions (for the team championships at Natanis on Saturday, Oct. 6),” said Hayes.
“Winning the individual title is awesome and definitely a good feeling, but winning as a team was much better. I was way more excited to win the team championship,” said Hayes who closes out his high school golf career in style. “Winning both championships in my senior year is great.”
Now Hayes sets his sights on another sport in another season. “The goal right now is to win the lacrosse state championship,” said Hayes. “We only lost three people from last year’s team.”
Hayes was joined at Saturday’s tournament by Cape teammates Alex McFarlane and Sean Eubanks. McFarlane finished with an 80 – a round he freely admitted was not his best. He ended his day with a triple bogey at 18 where he said a par would have left him in second place for the tourney at 77.
The Class A title was shared by Gorham’s David Gushee and Gardiner’s Ryan Gay. Both golfers came in with scores of 74.
The Class C championship was shared by Sean Keenan of Carrabec and Kyle Maines of Telstar – both at 71. And the schoolgirl title was won by Kate Merrill of North Yarmouth Academy (77).
