Francis Feeney remains hospitalized in special care following a single-car crash that claimed the life of his brother 12 days ago.
Feeney’s stepmother, Cathy Feeney of Buxton, said Tuesday he’s still unconscious and not breathing on his own.
“Everyone is praying,” she said. “Thank God there’s a lot of family support.
Feeney, 25, of Hollis, was driving the car that struck a large rock, utility pole and a tree on Sept. 30 on Killock Pond Road in Hollis. His brother, Daniel N. Perrin, 19, Gorham, was a passenger.
A memorial service was held Friday for Perrin at the Cressey Road United Methodist Church in Gorham. Perrin left two young children.
Last week, the men’s grandmother, Maren Washburn of Gorham, said Feeney, known as Frankie in the family, suffered crushed legs in addition to a broken hip, shoulder and ribs.
Cathy Feeney said her stepson underwent surgery on his right leg Tuesday and his vital signs were good. “Doctors are pleased with his progress,” she said following a call from his wife, Melissa Feeney.
However, she said, he’s not covered by medical insurance. To help pay medical bills, the family’s friends are planning a fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 17, from noon-7 p.m., at Skip’s, Narragansett Trail, Buxton. It includes a live band and raffles. Food will be available, but those attending are asked to take a dish to share with others. Tickets are $15.
Steve McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said last week that speed was the likely cause of the accident.
