As the Scarborough Police Department hits a road block in the investigation into the finances of the Scarborough Football Club, the town is considering what it can do to help.
Town councilors were scheduled to hold an executive session at their meeting Wednesday, after The Current’s deadline, to discuss the town’s options in assisting with the investigation.
According to Town Manager Ron Owens, the town’s attorney, Chris Vaniotis, was to meet with the council.
“The financial records of the club are in disarray,” Owens said.
In order to do a proper investigation, he said, they would have to be put back in order.
Club financial records from October 2001 to the present were subpoenaed this summer by the Scarborough police. The club sponsors the youth and middle school-age football programs and supports the high school football program. It was founded in 1997 by Randy Hitchcock, who resigned as president of the club in June. The presidency was taken over in July by Dan Kelley.
Police Chief Rob Moulton said the department is not budgeted for a more extensive forensic audit, and needs direction from the council to see if that would be something the town is willing to pay to pursue.
“Financial investigations are very complicated,” Moulton said. “If, in fact, there is a case that will go to court, you have to have somebody who is an expert to testify.”
According to Owens, currently, “there isn’t a strong case one way or the other.”
