The Gorham High girls soccer team continues to roll over its opponents. The Rams entered this week with an 8-0 record after last week’s wins over Marshwood, Massabesic and Biddeford and they current sit in their usual spot atop the Western Maine Class A standings.
Coach Jeanne Zarrilli knows that her team always gets the best effort from every team they play and that her squad needs to try and match that intensity every time they step onto the field. Marshwood is one of those teams Zarrilli was referring to and the Hawks nearly ended the Rams’ three-year winning streak at South Berwick on Monday, Sept. 17.
Neither team scored until very late in the game when Gorham’s Rachele Burns gave the Rams a 1-0 lead with four-plus minutes left on the clock. The Hawks hung tough and managed to tie the score on an Andi Logan penalty kick and the game headed to overtime. Burns made her night complete as she came up with the game-winning score in the extra session to ward off Marshwood’s upset bid.
Gorham’s other two wins from last week were less stressful – a 9-0 home win against Massabesic on Thursday, Sept. 20, and a 5-0 win at Biddeford last Saturday.
The Rams took a 4-0 lead at the half in the win over the Mustangs thanks to goals from Molly Folan, Lindsay Wilson, Katie Zarrilli and Burns and they coasted from there.
Gorham had five different goal scorers on Saturday morning in Biddeford. Sam Peters, Wilson, Burns, Kristi Zarrilli and Katie Zarrilli all found the back of the net as Gorham improved to 8-0.
So far this season, the Rams have shutout seven of their eight opponents (with senior goalkeeper Luci Pike having a strong year) and they’ve outscored their opponents by a 34-1 margin.
The Rams were scheduled to play at Bonny Eagle on Wednesday, Sept. 26, followed by a home game with Portland on Saturday at 11 a.m.
