Scarborough Senior Without Walls (WOW) programs beginning this month include walking, sightseeing and a barbecue.
Senior wellness walks on Saturdays run through Oct. 13 (no walk Oct. 6), from 8 a.m. until approximately 10 a.m. Walkers should meet in the lower town hall parking lot. Transportation from Scarborough Town Hall will be provided weekly. Walks will take place on local trails and will be guided by Scarborough Wellness volunteers. Bus space is limited. In case of inclement weather, walkers will be provided transportation to the Maine Mall for before-hours use of the mall corridors. There is a $5 registration/bus fee.
Tuesday marks the start of the weekly walks in Memorial Park. Those attending should meet at 9:30 a.m. the concession stand in Memorial Park for a walk with friends and neighbors. Afterward, participants can head over to the Freaky Bean coffee shop on Route 1 for coffee. On Tuesdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., seniors will receive a 10 percent discount on all drinks and food.
The annual senior barbecue kickoff is Wednesday, Sept. 19,
from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at Memorial Park. Jose Duddy will be performing.
Bingo is held every Friday at Hillcrest Community Center,
108 Hillcrest Ave., starting at 11:30 a.m. Senior Series activities at Hillcrest resume Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. for $5. Scarborough resident Dave Murray will be on hand to recount his recent trip to Nice and Monte Carlo with a slide presentation and stories. Highlights include the Grand Prix of Monaco auto race and the famous Mediterranean Sea beaches. Register by Friday, Sept. 21.
Registration has begun for the fall trips. Fryeburg Fair Senior Day is Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The bus departs lower high school parking lot. Stroll around Maine’s largest agricultural fair, which offers years of tradition with various types of food, crafts and entertainment along with horse racing, exhibition halls and countless livestock. Reserve a spot by registering at 730-4150. Cost for the fair trip is $10.
