South Portland 14

Cheverus 6

The South Portland Red Riots came back from a season opening 36-12 loss at the hands of Gorham to get their first win of the season 14-6 at Cheverus.

The game was a tight one until late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Nick Gaddar hit Matt Hebert with a 9-yard touchdown pass with just over two minutes left to seal the win for the Riots.

All of the scoring came in the game’s second half. Cheverus struck first when Topher Pochebit sprung free for a 44-yard touchdown run in the opening seconds of the second half. The Stags missed the extra point and held a 6-0 lead.

South Portland took the lead for good less than five minutes later when Ryan Curit found the end zone on a five-yard touchdown run. The Riots clinched the win on the late TD from Gaddar to Hebert.

South Portland faces a tough test this Friday night, when they travel to Bonny Eagle to take on the undefeated Scots at 7 p.m.

The Scots have been scoring a bunch of points this season, having handily defeated Cheverus in the season opener 41-6. Last week, the Scots spotted Windham to a 14-0 lead, but came roaring back to score 49 unanswered points to beat the Eagles 49-14.
