The Scarborough Public Library was recently closed for three weeks for much needed repairs. Throughout that time, residents of our community waited patiently for the re-opening. At the appointed hour of 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 6, the library doors reopened and life returned to the building – in abundance! Patrons streamed in, and with them came the return of 6,784 materials. In addition, 2,206 items were checked out. In all, 8,990 materials crossed the library’s circulation desk between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. – a library record!

Particularly heartwarming were the comments shared by all who entered throughout the day. “I’m so glad you’re open again,” and “We missed visiting the library,” were common themes shared by young and old. Congratulations on the repair of our leaky roof were in order, as were references to the new carpeting and the redesign of the service and display areas. (One patron even asked in jest if shoes should be removed before entering!) The public computer stations were filled within moments after opening, and reference and children’s staff were immediately called upon to use their expertise in locating materials. What a wonderful validation of our much- needed role in the community!

I want to acknowledge the incredible effort of the library’s staff throughout the renovation process. Their willingness to get “down and dirty” as we striped 17 years of grime from our building and grounds was phenomenal. It was a true test of their good humor and cooperative spirit. I also want to extend my thanks to the libraries in our neighboring communities for welcoming Scarborough residents during our closure. The decision to interrupt services, while difficult and necessary, was softened by the knowledge that other libraries could offer many of the services our users have come to depend on.

I invite all residents of Scarborough, from infant to senior, all employees working in Scarborough businesses and all students attending Scarborough schools to come visit your library. While you are here, make sure you sign up for a free library card, or if you have one, check to make sure it is current. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and our staff is available to assist you in getting “the smartest card,” a Scarborough Public Library card. I also encourage you to check our programming display and Web site for upcoming events for all ages and interests.

On behalf of the library trustees and the entire staff, I thank all of Scarborough’s residents for their patience during the renovation period, and most importantly, for their much appreciated return. It’s great to be back in business!
