Stephen Gurney remained in critical condition on Wednesday, a week after he crashed his motorcycle into a turning vehicle on William Clarke Drive in Westbrook.
Westbrook police say Gurney, 31, of Windham, was eastbound on a Honda motorcycle with a 15-year-old girl riding on the back when he struck the side of 2007 Honda Accord at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The Accord, driven by 54-year-old Linda Wright of Gorham, was traveling westbound and turning left into Hannaford Supermarket.
Police said Gurney dropped the motorcycle into a slide as he was about to strike the turning vehicle and his passenger fell off. A piece of the motorcycle then caught on the ground and flipped the motorcycle back up, hurtling Gurney into the car. He was found unconscious just a few feet from his motorcycle.
Police said Gurney had a suspended license and no motorcyle endorsement. He was traveling about 40-50 mph, police said. The speed limit on the road is 35 mph.
Gurney was taken to Maine Medical Center.
The 15-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, was conscious at the scene, transported to Maine Medical Center and quickly discharged. Police said she may have broken her wrist.
Neither were wearing helmets.
Wright was also treated at Maine Medical Center and quickly discharged.
Police are waiting on a reconstruction report to identify what caused the crash.
