The Scarborough Adult Learning Center still has some space available in a number of fall craft, wellness and personal enrichment classes. Among them are:
Fly Fishing: Topics covered include required equipment, fish feeding habits, aquatic insects, casting, repairs, water dynamics and more. The course ends with a day-long fishing trip to one of the instructor’s favorite spots. Dates: Sept. 10-Oct. 20. Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost; $70
Hunter Safety: This course is required to obtain an adult hunting license, and is designed to promote responsible and ethical conduct, and safe handling of equipment for persons 14 years old and up. The instructor is an experienced hunter. Dates: Monday and Wednesday, Sept. 10-Oct. 1. Time: 6-8:30 p.m. Cost: Free, but registration is required
Choices for Sustainable Living: This is a discussion course to explore ways to make more positive ecological choices in daily lives, as a community,and as a society. The group may discuss the field’s leading writers, heroes, and organizations making a difference. Dates: Wednesdays, Sept. 12-Nov. 7. Time: 6-8 p.m. Cost: $30.
Video Legacy Production Workshop: No experience is needed, and no equipment is required, as participants will be using the high school’s video workshop, computers, video cameras and microphones to produce their own personal video, documenting the memories and stories of an older relative or friend. Students will spend time discussing content ideas, crafting questions and learning effective interviewing techniques, prior to filming. Dates: Thursdays, Sept. 13-Nov. 15. Time: 6-8 p.m. Cost: $100.
Hosting a Party with Ease: There’s no need to panic when guests arrive. This course will provide helpful tips, organizational skills and confidence in order to create a stress-free and memorable event for family or friends. Topics include pre-planning for various types of parties, table setting, greetings, introductions, manners and more. Date: Tuesday, Oct. 30. Time: 6-8 p.m. Cost: $45.
Bookkeeping for Small Businesses Once you’ve covered the basic principles of general ledger accounting in an easy-to-understand manner, you’ll apply what you’ve learned and practice real world transactions for a sample company. Students completing this beginner’s level course will then be well prepared to move onto a Quickbooks or Peachtree software course. Dates: Tuesdays, Sept. 11-Nov. 13. Time: 6-7 p.m. Cost: $100, plus $10 materials..
Maine Driving Dynamics: Experienced and new drivers will benefit from learning defensive driving techniques. Topics during this two-night course will include new traffic laws, rules of the road, how to avoid collisions and the challenges that face Maine drivers on a daily basis. Students may be eligible for a 3-point credit on their driving license and a discount from their insurance carrier. Dates: Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 16 and Oct. 18. Time: 6-8:30 p.m. Cost: $25.
