Scarborough teenagers will receive a first-hand look at financial planning and money management in “Money $mart Teens,” a series of five free workshops that begin Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m., at the Scarborough Public Library.

The course is a partnership between the library and Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution. The first program in the series is “Budgeting and Goal Setting: Putting You in the Driver’s Seat.”

The second workshop in the series, “Electronic Banking: Tracking Your Money,” will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24. Other sessions will include “Building Smart Credit: Good Debt vs. Bad Debt,” Wednesday, Dec. 12; “Cost of Working: What Do You Really Take Home?,” Wednesday, Feb. 7 (snow date Thursday, Feb, 8); and “College Expenses: The Untold Story,” Wednesday, April 4. All sessions will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Scarborough Public Library meeting room.

Celeste Shinay, manager of programming and development at the Library, said the series will equip teens to responsibly participate in their own financial life. Both institutions hope the series will support the state’s recent legislation to promote financial literacy.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for high school and middle school students to access information that is geared specifically to them,” she said.

According to Donald Lauzier, vice president of community relations at Saco & Biddeford Savings, “This is a program we hope to someday offer students in other local communities.”
