Cheverus 35
Scarborough 8
The Scarborough football team battled the heat and the Stags in their final preseason tuneup but fell to Cheverus 35-8 Saturday in Portland.
Cheverus scored their first points of the game on their first drive. The Stags methodically marched down the field using mostly running plays by Nate Wiley. Wiley eventually put the ball in the end zone from two yards out to give Cheverus a 7-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, the Stags struck again. The drive began when John Savasuk recovered a Scarborough fumble as time was running out in the first quarter. Four plays into the second, Vin Ciampi hooked up with Ryan McQuaid for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead.
Scarborough then took over at their own 12-yard line after a penalty on the kick return. The Cheverus defense allowed only five yards in three plays to force a punt. The punt was blocked into the end zone where the Red Storm fell on it for a safety and a 15-0 Cheverus lead.
The Stags took full advantage of the free kick to score once again. Seven plays and 36 yards later, the Stags were in the end zone again. It was Wiley once again punching it in from eight yards out. The extra point was good and Cheverus led 22-0.
The Stags scored twice more in the second half to take a 35-0 lead. The first of those two scores was early in the third quarter when Ciampi dove in from a yard out. The big play in that drive was a 39-yard pass from Ciampi to Matt Ball. The last of the Cheverus touchdowns came late in the third when Matt Place scored on a 22 yard run.
Scarborough got on the board late in the fourth when they returned an interception 15 yards for the score. They were successful in their two-point attempt to make it a 35-8 score.
With the preseason now over the Red Storm will get their regular season started Friday when they head to Biddeford to take on the Tigers at Waterhouse Field. The Red Storm finished 0-8 last year and will look to improve as the season goes on this year.
