Despite the slow pace for commuters, and a few snags with moving both above-ground and underground utilities, construction on the intersection of Spring Street and County Road is on schedule and on budget, according to Shawn Smith, project manager for the Maine Department of Transportation.
The state is rebuilding the intersection to add additional turn and through lanes. The project started in May, will slow down in November with the cold temperatures and will receive the final touches next spring.
The intersection will be paved and there will be “minimal, if any” hindrance to commuters over the winter, according to Smith, though final paving that can’t be completed in the winter will cause further delays in the spring.
“That intersection never operated very well,” Smith said. Adding turn lanes will increase the capacity of the intersection.
