Marshall honored at Kent Stables
Katie Marshall recently presented her mom, Debbie Marshall, with the Sara Brown Award, sponsored annually by Kent Stables, Fort Hill Road.
The award is given in memory of Sara Brown, who died at 17 in an ccident on Route 114 in 1993. Brown had been an avid rider and riding instructor at Kent Stables.
The award is given to riders who demonstrate horsemanship, dedication and caring for horses. Debbie Marshall, who had been thrown from a horse in her youth, resumed her interest in horses when her daughter, then 9, began riding at Kent Stables 11 years ago.
Phyllis Kent of Kent Stables said Debbie looked forward to horse shows when Katie got her first horse and served as her daughter’s groom. The mother and daughter suffered a sad experience when the horse tragically died from colic. But a month later, they bought another horse.
Kent said Debbie has only ridden several times over the years and was “flattered and pleased” to receive the honor.
Family barbecue Sept. 7
Gorham Business & Civic Exchange kicks off its season with its fifth annual family barbecue, Friday, Sept. 7, starting at 5 p.m., at Portland Faith Center (new name Life Church), 8 Elkins Drive, off New Portland Road.
This event is sponsored by the exchange’s board of directors and will be held rain or shine, as it can move inside if need be.
Members and guests are invited. There is no agenda or speeches, just time to network, celebrate autumn and have some fun.
Hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixings will be provided. Those attending should bring a potluck dish to place on the “sharing” table and a non-alcoholic beverage. There will be art activities for the kids, games and prizes.

Barrow, Cossar on dean’s list
Two students from Gorham were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass.
They are Stephanie Barrow, a senior majoring in management, and Kristina Cossar, a junior majoring in sports management.
U.S. taxpayer debt
The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Aug. 24 that the U.S. public debt was $8,980,642,761,969.96.
