I had the distinct privilege to chair the Scarborough 2007 Concerts in the Park series brought to you by the Scarborough Community Chamber and Scarborough Community Services this summer. Over the past 10 months, I have worked with some of the best people our town and state have to offer. This year’s volunteers (many Scarborough Community Chamber members) put in many hours to make this event possible.
I would like to thank all the committee members, Laurie Mooney, Leroy Crocket, John Rice, Julie Bassett and Kevin Freeman. Special thanks to the volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) for traffic control, the Scarborough Rotary Club, SCTV for filming and airing shows on our local access channel, all of the musicians, their support teams and their individual management (some of the most professional and friendly people I have had the pleasure to have worked with). And thanks to Scarborough Community Services and Steve Quirk and all of the staff, who work hard to make the park and auditorium look and function so well. I would be remiss if I did not thank the over 50 local and area businesses that generously sponsored our 2007 Summer Concert series.
If you did not have a chance to attend one of our concerts, you missed a great night of music. This year’s performers included Coos Canyon, Bob Charest Band, Wavelength, Don Campbell Band, Motor Booty Affair and the Tony Boffa Band, performing a wide variety of music. Since 2004 our attendance has risen starting from the original “home” venue of the Scarborough Public Library lawn, where 50 people was a good night, to the first full year at Memorial Park last year, where we drew just under 2,500 people. This summer our concerts attracted more than 6,000 fans.
I have been the chairman of this event, but it was truly a team effort. The support and sponsorship of area businesses to make this a truly town event that people want to go to is truly rewarding. I would also like to thank everyone who did come down to a show or two. We invite you and your family to join us next July as we celebrate our eighth season with more great local bands.
On behalf of the Scarborough Community Chamber, I thank you, and we hope to see you again next summer.
