Nineteen-year-old Chris Harmon won his second straight Scarborough Summerfest 5K last Friday evening as he finished ahead of 112 other competitors with a time of 15:43.34. Harmon won last year’s race with a time of 16:22.30.

Paul Johnson (the race winner in 2004) pushed Harmon all the way as he took second with a time of 15:59. Third place went to Joey Luchini (16:15); the fourth place finisher was Ben Talbot (16:23); and in fifth place was JJ Forcella (17:00).

Ten-year-old Nathan Howard won the Kids 1-mile event with a time of 6:19.59. Andrew Sholl was the runner-up – finishing less than a second behind Howard. Mason Saltz placed third, Hannah Robbins was fourth, and Sophie Warren took fifth.

The other runners in the 1-mile race included (in order of finish) Sam Warren, Sean Arsenault, Sean McDonald, Willy Burdick, Thomas Spencer, Elizabeth Poulin, Katie Poulin, Laura Volan, Natalie Taylor, Maddie Warren, Aidan Cohen, Ian Michelson, Anne Gikas, Samantha Beckwith, Sydney Michelson, and Isabel Burdick.

Breakaway 5K results

A crisp, beautiful morning greeted the participants at Saturday morning’s Breakaway 5K race in Old Orchard Beach. Race winner Ed Baker of Palo Alto, Calif., used the quality running conditions to tie the course record of 15:15. And just 30 seconds off the winning pace was runner-up Andrew Van Hoogenstyn of Cape Elizabeth – the top Maine finisher in the event that attracted more than 350 runners.

The top female finisher was Kim Duclos of Boston, who came in with a time of 17:29 – 15th overall. The second-best female time was turned in by Dayton’s Christine Snow-Reaser (18:41) and third best was Suzanne Ray of Saco (18:55).

Some other top local finishers included Scott Gorneau of South Portland (fifth in 16:31), Eric Neuts of Portland (seventh in 16:510, Michael Downing of Gorham (11th in 17:04), Jesse Hugo of Falmouth (12th in 17:12), and Peter Downing of Gorham (24th in 18:03).

Several local runners also won their age groups, including Jessica Stevenson of South Portland (female 30-34), Scott Gorneau of South Portland (male 30-34), Mary Pardi of Falmouth (female 35-39), Donna Libby of Falmouth (female 45-49), and Joan Tremberth of Scarborough (female 60-64).
