School candidates’ orientation

The Gorham School Committee will hold an orientation for committee candidates, Wednesday from 6-7:20 p.m., in the superintendent’s conference room at the municipal center, 75 South St.

Nomination papers are available at the town clerk’s office for two, three-year terms on the school committee.

Sappi golf tourney

The annual Sappi golf tournament is set for Saturday, Sept. 8, at Gorham Country Club. The shotgun start is at 8 a.m.

The entry fee is $60 per player; $36 for Gorham Country Club members. The fee includes green fee, golf cart, chicken barbeque and prizes. Golfers are asked to form their foursomes. The tournament will be held rain or shine.

Bell earns degree

Jaime Bell was awarded the degree of physician assistant in commencement exercises from the University of New England’s College of Arts and Sciences and College of Health Professions in May at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland.

Bell is the daughter of Diane Bell of Gorham and the late Reed Bell. She is the granddaughter of Barbara Bell, South Portland, and Constance Johnley, Vero Beach, Fla., and Portland.

Since graduation, Bell passed the National Certification of Physician Assistants licensing board exam in June. She is now working as a PA-C at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, a new cancer treatment center in Augusta. She also accepted a per diem position in the Emergency Department at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

Bell lives in Brunswick.

See the Celts

Gorham Recreation Department is planning a trip to Boston to see the Celtics play Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Alan Grady, special events director at Gorham Recreation Department, said the bus would leave the Gorham Municipal Center at 3 p.m. and return around midnight. The bus will arrive in Boston about 5:30 p.m., allowing time to get dinner before the game with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.

Grady said the trip will be an opportunity to see new Celtic players Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

The cost, which includes transportation and game ticket, is $45 per person. Grady said anyone under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Payment is due in full at Gorham Recreation Department on Friday, Oct. 19.

Woman’s club kickoff

The GFWC/Gorham Woman’s Club will meet on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Parish Church to start its 2007-08 year.

This is a potluck luncheon for friends and prospective members. Past presidents will be present to give a history of the club.

The purpose of the Gorham Woman’s Club is to bring together women of all ages, interests and experiences who are interested in community betterment. Enrollment in the club is open to anyone wishing to become an active volunteer, and guests are always welcome at all meetings.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Aug. 15 that the U.S. Public debt was $8,965,125,788,707.57.
